A man who broke his cousin’s nose by head-butting him at a family party has been jailed for 14 months.

Gerald McCullion, 33, of St Helier’s Road, South Shore, Blackpool, was also accused of biting off a large chunk of an uncle’s ear at the same party but was cleared at an earlier hearing.

McCullion’s cousin was celebrating his 21st birthday party at an address on Duke Street, Blackpool, last December when violence flared.

Not only was his cousin left with a broken nose, McCullion also assaulted another man by barging into him as he stormed out.

The defendant admitted offences of assault occasioning actual bodily harm and also common assault.

A sentencing hearing at Preston Crown Court heard how he had been estranged from members of his family, but went along to the birthday party after it carried on from a pub.

When a row broke out between him and a relative, his cousin tried to act as a peacemaker but was attacked.

Rachel Woods, defending, told the hearing McCullion believed others had been acting aggressively towards him.

He claimed he had resorted to head-butting his cousin in order to get away from him.

But jailing him for 14 months, Judge Robert Altham told him he had effectively used his head as a weapon.

He said: “His intention was to try and persuade you the rest of the family had not set their face against you.

“He was trying to make peace between you and the rest of the family.

“Maybe he took hold of you, but your response was wholly unacceptable.”

Several weeks ago, McCullion was cleared of attacking his uncle by biting off part of his ear and causing a fractured jaw.

He told a jury he had not been involved and claimed he could not have done it because he was missing his upper front teeth.

Detectives said a police officer, who was “in the right place at the right time”, rushed the victim to hospital himself because of the severity of the injuries.

Baker, 20, formerly of South Park Drive, Marton, was found guilty of wounding and jailed by a judge at Preston Crown Court for the attack, which took place in December.

Det Con Emma Shuttleworth, of Blackpool CID, told said after the hearing: “The victim has got life-changing injuries that have affected his job and the way he presents himself.

“The attack slit his eye and left him blind in that eye.

“The victim is a really nice lad who was not out looking for trouble.

“This attack has changed his life, the poor lad. He didn’t deserve that.”

She said the victim was with friends at a house party, on Kenilworth Avenue, on the evening of December 6.

“They are a bunch of really nice kids,” she added. “They were having a house party for a friend who was moving away from the area.”

Baker was among a number of uninvited guests who turned up to the house late in the evening.

The attack is believed to have taken place either late on December 6 or in the early hours of the following day.

Det Con Shuttleworth said: “Without any provocation or any reason whatsoever, he approached the victim, who was outside the address, and smashed him in the face with a Bacardi bottle.

“A police officer driving down the street saw the commotion and arrested the suspect.

“It was a case of being in the right place at the right time – it could have escalated into something far worse.”

She said the injuries were so serious that the officer took the victim straight to hospital himself, rather than wait for an ambulance to arrive.

She praised the victim and other involved in helping bring Baker to justice, saying they had all been “really accommodating” of the legal process.

Baker was given a 12-year sentence – nine years in prison followed by three years on licence – at a hearing on Monday after being found guilty of wounding.

A man who went into his local Sainsbury’s supermarket and stuck stickers on packets of meat that read “beware halal is barbaric and funds terrorism” has been given a month-long curfew.

Liam Gary Edwards, 29, today pleaded guilty to racially aggravated criminal damage on the day of his trial but insisted that he was protesting against the halal slaughter of animals after watching a television documentary.

The self-proclaimed “animal lover” stuck nine stickers with the hashtag #banhalal on halal poultry products after obtaining the stickers over the internet.

At an earlier hearing held at Manchester and Salford Magistrates’ Court, the van driver pleaded guilty to possession of cannabis after police found the Class B during a search of his home in Chancel Avenue, Ordsall, following the incident.

Today the same court was told that CCTV captured Edwards going into the supermarket on Regent Road, Salford, on February 20 with his girlfriend and two young children.

Later staff at the store became aware of the stickers on various packets of chicken breasts, thighs and a whole chicken worth £16.50 which could no longer be sold due to concerns for contamination.

Upon searching the hashtag term on Twitter, staff found images of the stickers on trollies and point of sale displays.

For the prosecution, Miss Lisa Connor said that upon his arrest Edwards apologised to officers.

She said: “He accepted he had been in possession of the stickers and placed them on various items. He got involved in a Twitter conversation about halal and maintains that his whole motivation was his concern for the way in which halal meat is obtained and what happens in abattoirs.”

She added that he had never disputed the offence and accepted the prosecution’s case

“He maintained he wasn’t motivated by any racial prejudice he just wanted to highlight the cruelty involved. He admitted he was sorry for his actions.”

The court heard that he had no similar matters on his record.

For Edwards, Mr Lee Hammond said that after watching a documentary on how livestock were dealt with in slaughterhouses he had taken to Twitter.

There he came across others who shared views of what they perceived to be “unfavourable methods” and one sent him the stickers.

Mr Hammond said: “Unfortunately the group he had found had more extreme views that went in to religion, funding and terrorism.”

He added that there had not been any complaints to the store or the police by members of the Muslim community.

Edwards told the bench: “I’m a big animal lover, be it for racial or other purposes I believe it is wrong to treat animals in that way.”

In passing sentence of a four-week curfew for the two offences to run between 9pm and 7am, chairman Mrs Vanessa Goldstone said it had not been “a run-of-the-mill case”.

He must also pay £100 prosecution costs, £60 surcharge and £16.50 compensation.

Paige was reported missing three days after leaving her home

The man who murdered Blackpool teenager Paige Chivers has been jailed for 33 years.

Robert Ewing, 60, was found guilty of murdering the 15-year-old in his Blackpool flat in August 2007.

Earlier this month, a jury convicted him, after the court was told he had developed an “inappropriate sexual interest” in Paige before he beat her to death.

Paige’s body has never been found.

Bloodstains belonging to the “vulnerable” teenager were later found by a police forensics team in the inner hallway of his flat in All Hallows Road, Bispham.

The murder was said to have taken place between August 23 and August 27 2007.

On August 23, Paige had packed two carrier bags with clothes and left her home in Longford Avenue, Bispham, after a family row.

Later the same day she was spotted at a nearby bus stop with the defendant.

An extensive proof of life inquiry found no evidence Paige was alive and she never claimed a ‘significant’ inheritance sum left to her after her mother’s death.

Less than a fortnight before Paige went missing, Ewing contacted police to tell them that a ‘problem child’ had turned up on his doorstep having been thrown out by her father.

Prosecutors said he was effectively “testing the water” and that there had been “very little reaction” by officials.

Ewing was also found guilty by a jury at Preston Crown Court of perverting the course of justice by intimidating witnesses and providing false information to the police.

Co-defendant Gareth Dewhurst, 46, of Duncan Avenue, Blackpool, was convicted of perverting the course of justice and assisting Ewing to dispose of Paige’s body.

Police say they remain committed to finding Paige’s body.

Robert Ewing sentenced to life imprisonment for murdering 15-year-old in Blackpool to stop her reporting their sexual contact to police

A man who murdered a 15-year-old girl to stop her reporting their sexual contact has been sentenced to life imprisonment, with a minimum of 33 years in prison.

Robert Ewing, 60, exploited Paige Chivers, a vulnerable teenager from Blackburn, Lancashire, for his sexual gratification and then decided to silence her when she threatened to go to the authorities.

A jury convicted him of murder earlier this month, but was not told that Ewing had previous convictions for child sex abuse.

Ewing served a 12-month prison sentence in 1995 for gross indecency with a 13-year-old girl, whom he also indecently assaulted.

Justice Jeremy Baker, sentencing Ewing at Preston crown court, told him he had carried out a “carefully planned and executed murder” to avoid the prospect of returning to jail.

The body of the teenager has still not been found, nearly eight years after she went missing.

Mr Justice Baker said Paige’s life was “in turmoil” in the summer of 2007 after her mother had died in February that year and her late father’s addiction to alcohol had worsened to the extent that he largely abandoned her.

He said she was “sexually promiscuous” and an “easy target”, which was recognised by Ewing, whose flat near her home in Bispham became “something of a magnet” for young girls as he allowed them to smoke, drink alcohol and take drugs.

The judge said: “There came a point when Paige Chivers realised that she could manipulate the situation to her advantage and threatened to report you to the authorities … the last thing you wanted to occur was for the public authorities to be acquainted with what you had been doing.”

Less than a fortnight before Paige went missing, Ewing contacted police to tell them that a “problem child” had turned up on his doorstep, having been thrown out by her father.

Prosecutors said he was effectively “testing the water” and there had been “very little reaction” by officials.

The judge, who labelled the defendant intelligent and devious, said he also wanted to create an “innocent cover story”. He told the court that the precise circumstances of Paige’s death may never be known in the absence of any explanation from Ewing, but noted that Ewing had been heard in a covert police recording saying: “You don’t mess with me. Quick hammer over the fucking head, then they will be sorry.”

Only three tiny spots of blood belonging to Paige were found by police in inner hallway of his flat in All Hallows Road, after a meticulous clean-up by the defendant.

On August 23 2007, Paige packed two carrier bags with clothes and left her home in Longford Avenue, Bispham, after a row with her father over missing money. Later the same day she was spotted at a nearby bus stop with the defendant. An extensive proof of life inquiry followed her disappearance but found no evidence that Paige was alive and she never claimed a “significant” inheritance left to her after her mother’s death.

Ewing murdered her between August 23 and August 27 and then persuaded his friend, Gareth Dewhurst, 46, to use his car to dispose of the body. The judge said Dewhurst had been a “willing, if not enthusiastic, participant”. Dewhurst, of Duncan Avenue, Blackpool, was jailed for seven years for assisting an offender and an additional year for intending to pervert the course of justice by intimidating witnesses.

Ewing, of Kincraig Place, Blackpool, was also convicted of perverting the course of justice by intimidating witnesses and providing false information to the police.
Both men denied all the offences.

The teenager was described as “a fun-loving kid, bright and funny” in a victim impact statement from sister Madison Gordon, which was read out in court.

She said: “Paige was only a kid when her mum (Sheila) passed away in 2007. I would say it broke us. I think it hit Paige hard because of her age.
“Every birthday is a reminder that Paige is no longer with us to open her cards and to celebrate with her.”

She thought Paige would have gone on to study hair and beauty and would have been “a brilliant mum”. She added: “Not a day goes by that we don’t think about her. It should not have happened to my bonny outgoing sister. We all have big holes in our hearts that can no longer be replaced.”

Police say they remain committed to finding Paige’s body.

A thug who threw a bin and traffic cone at a Doncaster takeaway delivery driver’s car before he and two others set upon him in a ‘horrific attack’ has been jailed.

Kane Moffatt, aged 22, kicked the Mexborough man repeatedly in the horror assault, which he carried out alongside 20-year-old Philip Temperton and a 17-year-old boy who cannot be named for legal reasons.

The violent trio admitted assault occasioning actual bodily harm at Sheffield Crown Court. Temperton was also jailed.

Just after midnight on October 4 last year, the 17-year-old chased the delivery driver’s vehicle down Mexborough High Street until it pulled up outside a fast food outlet.

The driver went inside the shop, but when he came out the three men punched him to the floor before Moffatt and Temperton kicked him repeatedly.

Another man, who had been in the shop, came outside to try to help the victim, but Moffat and the 17-year-old then began to attack him too. He escaped and ran back into the shop.

Moffatt then threw several items at the victim’s car, including a traffic cone and a bin, before the 17-year-old punched the car window.

The three then fled the scene, leaving the ‘distressed’ man on the floor.

They were arrested in November 2014 and entered not guilty pleas on their first court appearance in January.

But they changed their pleas to guilty and were sentenced on Friday.

Moffatt and the 17-year-old had also admitted common assault.

Moffatt, of Hawthorne Crescent, Mexborough, was sentenced to 16 months in prison and Temperton, of Arnold Crescent, Mexborough, was jailed for ten months.

The 17-year-old Doncaster boy was given a 12-month youth rehabilitation order.

Investigating officer Det Con Della O’Horo said after the court hearing: “This was a horrific attack on a man, and his friend who tried to help, for no reason whatsoever.

“The actions of these three that night are absolutely deplorable.

“Fortunately, the two victims did not sustain any serious injuries as a result of this violent assault, however the delivery driver has been extremely distressed by the incident.

“I hope residents in Mexborough feel some form of reassurance that we will not tolerate any form of criminality or violence and will do all that we can to bring offenders in the town to justice.”

A volunteer soldier posted a comment on Facebook suggesting racist violent revenge should be taken on the day drummer Lee Rigby was murdered.

Mark Tonner wrote “Get the boys together we need to paint the town red with Muslim blood”.

He was arrested after a member of the public complained on the Lancashire Police website about what Tonner had written.

Tonner, 36, of Ashton Road, Blackpool, pleaded guilty to sending an offensive message.

He was bailed for pre-sentence reports and will be sentenced at a later date by Blackpool magistrates.

Andrea Fawcett, prosecuting, said after the murder of Lee Rigby in Woolwich, Tonner posted the comment on Facebook on May 23.

Tonner wrote “Dean, you’re in charge of Blackpool now. Get the boys together we need to paint the town red with Muslim blood”.

When interviewed by police Tonner said he had been angry and drunk at the time. He did not know Dean personally but believed he was a member of The English Defence League (EDL).

Hugh Pond, defending, said his client had been a member of the Army Reserve, formerly known as the Territorial Army, for more than five years and served as a clerk in the Transport Regiment at Grantham.

Tonner had been drinking heavily and had been revolted by the television pictures of the blood covered men saying they had murdered drummer Rigby.

Tonner, who was said in a reference from his commanding officer to have an exemplary character in the Army, was not a member of the EDL or National Front.

He was thoroughly ashamed of what he had done and was under investigation by the Army Reserve.

A NORTH West Infidel protestor was caught on tape shouting racist abuse in Blackburn.

Clare Louise Arrowsmith, 38, of Bothley Road, in Blackpool, had travelled to the town to take part in the far right rally.

She pleaded guilty to religiously aggravated threatening behaviour and was given a conditional discharge for 18 months.

She was also told to pay £85 costs and a £15 victim surcharge.

Catherine Allan, prosecuting, said Arrowsmith had travelled by train to take part in the town centre demo.

“She told police she was demonstrating against Islam because they were ‘grooming and murdering our children’,” Ms Allan said.

“She went on to express some extremist views about Muslims.”

Gary McAnulty, defending, said his client previously attended English Defence League demonstrations. He said there was no one else present except for the police.

He said: “This was the first time she had attended anything organised by the North West Infidels.

“They are a splinter group and very right wing compared to the EDL. It would appear there was no one there except the police.

“She was filmed making the comments and then went home.”

Wayne Riley outside Bolton magistrates court

A PROTESTER has been fined after parking outside polling stations on General Election day with a ‘Labour paedo party’ sign on his van.

Police were called to Horwich Library in Jones Street on May 7 after the white van had been spotted there, Bolton Magistrates Court heard.

Officers traced the van to Wayne Riley and found it on the street outside his Singleton Avenue home — still with two signs stuck to the side.

Riley swore and became abusive to officers, who quizzed him about the signs, the other of which read ‘please do not vote Labour’.

He was arrested after police made repeated efforts to reason with him, the court was told.

Riley appeared in court yesterday representing himself, but was removed by security staff at the request of chair of the bench Roz Clarke, after repeatedly shouting down magistrates and court staff.

He left the court building and security staff were instructed not to let him back in. The case was then heard in his absence.

Giving evidence, Sgt Alex Metcalfe said: “I could see straight away that he was angry and belligerent.

“He was swearing and he was aggressive. Children of school age were playing out and they were within hearing distance of what he was saying.

“His behaviour, coupled with the signs he had put on his van, and the fact we had already been called to one incident meant I was alarmed at how he was behaving.

“There were children playing out and mums walking past his can. There was no option but to arrest him.”

PC Alison Casey said in her evidence that Riley eventually turned his abuse to her, saying “the police never do anything about child abuse”.

The court heard she might not have taken any action had Riley calmed down and removed the signs from the van — which was parked on the street in full public view — but he refused to do so.

Riley was found guilty of a public order offence of using threatening or abusive words or behaviour likely to cause harassment, alarm or distress.

He must pay a court bill of £1,255, comprising a £350 fine, £350 in costs, £520 criminal courts charge and a £35 victim surcharge.

On the day of the election, Labour councillor for Horwich Kevin McKeon said: “I feel sorry for a person whose bitterness can compel them to do something like this.

“I don’t think this will have any effect on voters today.

“I am of course disappointed that someone has done this but I am very pleased that the police have taken swift and correct action on the matter.”

Labour MP Julie Hilling went on to lose her Bolton West seat to the Conservatives’ Chris Green by just 801 votes.

Simon Badham received a three-year football banning order.

A SOUTH Tyneside football yob described as a “genuinely decent member of society” has been slapped with a banning order after a violent clash between rival fans.

Simon Badham avoided jail after admitting violent disorder following a mass street brawl between Sunderland and West Ham supporters.

The 21-year-old, from Frobisher Street, Hebburn, was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment, suspended for two years, with 250 hours’ unpaid work. He was also given a three-year banning order.

Badham was one of four men to appear at Newcastle Crown Court yesterday to be sentenced over the violence, which erupted outside Revolution bar in Sunderland on January 12.

Judge Jeremy Freedman said Badham is usually a “genuinely decent member of society”.

Also sentenced was Kevin Bilton, 51, of Lambton Drive, Hetton, who admitted violent disorder and was sentenced to four months’ imprisonment, suspended for two years, with 100 hours of unpaid work.

Sean Herron, 19, of Hogarth Drive, Columbia, Washington, who handed in a stash of testimonials to his usually positive character, was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment, suspended for two years, with 250 hours of unpaid work.

Shaun Baker, 29, of Gainsborough Square, Sunderland, was sentenced to four months’ imprisonment, suspended for two years with £500 costs.

All pleaded guilty to violent disorder and were given three-year football banning orders.

Judge Freedman said he accepted the men were ashamed of what they had done, and accepted none of them had been involved in the organising of the brawl by the Sunderland Youth Firm and rival supporters.

A FINE of £95 has been handed to a man who admitted assault and using threatening or abusive behaviour.

Adam Handley, aged 27, of Wilton Street, Bolton, committed the offences on May 25.

A Sittingbourne man who was beaten with a plank by two Asian men was himself hauled before the courts for racially aggravated assault.

Darren White posted footage on his Twitter account of the pair attacking him with a wooden plank as he fled through the town’s high street.

The 32-year-old then tweeted the former English Defence League leader Tommy Robinson, alerting him to the case.

“I got beat with wood and pole and I may be going prison for racial aggravated behaviour,” he posted.

The video shows White being chased past the New Century Cinema before being struck four times with the plank as he entered the high street.

White, of Doubleday Drive, Bapchild, went on to tweet “got court today as I said arrest the ****ing Muslims so up for section 5 (sic)”.

Tommy Robinson responded to the post, saying: “It’s a joke, that Muslim that hit you with the wood, has he been arrested?”

He was ordered to pay £1,925 in fines for assaulting the policemen and another £300 for having the drug.

However, White was found not guilty of racially aggravated behaviour.

The Asian men shown in the video initially denied any wrongdoing.

But Muhammad Ahad, 24, of Kingston Road, Epsom, and Sarwar Hussain, 25, of Palmerston Road, Chatham, changed their pleas to guilty in court and will be sentenced later this month.

A MAN who threatened police with a fake gun has been has been jailed for two-and-a-half years.

Gareth Pipes was given 16 months for making a threat to kill and 16 months for possessing an imitation firearm.

A Derbyshire police spokeswoman said Pipes was wanted on recall to prison and on February 5, he called Matlock Police Station and asked to speak to a sergeant. When he was transferred to a sergeant, he made threats to kill him.

On February 7, officers visited a house in Overdale, Matlock, while searching for Pipes.

When they entered the house, Pipes produced a gun and threatened them. The officers arrested him and seized the gun, which was later found to be fake.

Pipes, 30, of no fixed abode, pleaded guilty to both crimes and was sentenced at Derby Crown Court on Monday, March 9.

A ʻBULLYʼ who preyed on vulnerable adults in South Derbyshire and threatened them at knifepoint for cash has been jailed for eight years.

Gareth Pipes, 25, from Swadlincote, stole £1,500 in cash from one victim and attempted to steal a social security giro from another man who was subjected to a terrifying ordeal in his own home.

Pipes, of no fixed abode, attended a hearing at Derby Crown Court to admit charges of false imprisonment, blackmail, robbery and possessing a knife in public.

The court heard that Pipes coerced his first victim, from Overseal, into accompanying him to a bank in High Street, Swadlincote, on September 14 last year, threatening him with a knife and forcing him to withdraw £1,500 in cash, which he then stole. The money was never recovered.

In a second incident, on October 17, he visited the home of another man in Hartshorne, again threatening him with a knife and demanding he hand over his giro before the victim fled without handing over the cheque.

It is understood that both victims were known to the offender.

Detective Sergeant Ian Louch, from Swadlincote police station, welcomed the lengthy sentence the court handed to Pipes.

He told the Mail: “Gareth Pipes was sentenced for offences where he picked on vulnerable people and through threats of violence attempted to obtain money from them.

“He is a very dangerous man who preyed on the vulnerability of adults in the Swadlincote area. He is basically a bully.

“We were pleased with the sentence as it puts across the message that people will not be allowed to get away with committing these kinds of offences.”

A THUG who targeted two strangers in a racist attack in Orford leaving one of the victims unconscious and in desperate need of hospital treatment is now behind bars.

Ryan Swindells, aged 20, of East Avenue, Orford, was handed a three year sentence after pleading guilty to a section 20 assault and affray.

The court heard how two men of Iraqi-Kurd origin were walking along Orford Lane on April 4 at 6.40pm when they heard shouting and swearing from a group of men on the other side of the road.

One of the men – later identified as Swindells – could be heard shouting racist abuse and crossed the road to approach the two men.

Prosecuting Paulinus Barnes said: “One of the victims thought if he was nice to him he would walk away but the other males were encouraging him.

“He then put his head towards one of the victims in a threatening manner.”

A fight broke out with at least four others getting involved in the street brawl.

At one point CCTV showed three men kicking one of the victims while on the floor.

One of the victims later lost consciousness and had to be put in the recovery position by a member of the public – his face covered in blood from the attack.

The victim was taken to Aintree Hospital where he was treated for head injuries and a fractured collar bone.

Defending Swindells, David James said both the defendant, who has struggled with binge drinking and a cocaine habit, and the victims were ‘giving as good as they can get’ during the fight.

He added: “Having spoken to this young man this is not a man who is proud of his actions.

“He is embarrassed by them and he is disappointed he is in court again.

“He is deeply ashamed he has used racist terms as he does not feel he is an ingrained racist.”

Swindells has a number of previous convictions – one racially aggravated.

Declan Jenks, aged 21, of Alder Lane, and Joshua Williamson, aged 21, of Marsh House Lane, were also sentenced at Warrington Crown Court on Friday for their involvement in the brawl.

Jenks was sentenced to two and a half years in prison after admitting a section 20 assault, affray and breach of a suspended sentence.

Williamson pleaded guilty to affray and must carry out 160 hours of unpaid work, 35 days of rehabilitation activity and a thinking skills programme.

The court heard how Jenks, who has a previous convictions for drunk and disorderly and assault occasioning actual bodily harm, originally became involved in the fight to break it up.

Defending Jenks, John Banasko, said: “Unfortunately initially he had good intentions effectively to assist Mr Swindells as he was originally in the minority but he did become involved and he did throw punches.”

He added that he was not involved in the racist abuse and did not kick the victims.

Williamson, who has a previous conviction for a public order offence in 2014, did not throw any punches and was not involved in the racist abuse but chased one of the victims up the street.

Defending Williamson, Michael Whitty said apart from one previous conviction, the defendant’s behaviour was ‘out of character’.

He said: “He is a young man and he clearly has ideas about what he wants to do during his life.

“When it is the right time he wants to join the marines. He has ideas for his life that does not involve coming back to court.”

Sentencing, Judge Nicholas Woodward said this would have been a ‘disturbing incident’ for members of the public to witness.

He added: “It started with Swindells making racist comment towards them for no apparent reason.

“Not content with that you [Swindells] then came over from the opposite side of the road towards them and they were trying to diffuse the situation but you were clearly looking for a fight.

“In a macho way you put your head towards his showing aggression.

“When they did not respond you started to punch out.”

THE MUM of Lee Swindells was forced to apologise to a judge after lashing out as her son was led down to the cells.

A PRIMARY school girl was sexually exploited to feed the sickening fantasies of a high-risk sex offender and his partner.

Sickening pictures of the little girl were shared by her abusers – convicted sex offender Michael Kinnear and Caroline Shaw – and distributed.

Shaw, 29, formerly of Thornton Road, Morecambe, now of Meldon Road, Heysham, and Kinnear, 47, latterly of Fairfield Avenue, Blackpool, pleaded guilty to inciting a youngster to be involved in pornography worldwide.

Kinnear was given a nine-year extended sentence including five years and four months in custody, while Shaw was jailed for two years eight months.

The court heard in a “lengthy graphic” messenger conversation retrieved by police, Kinnear asked Shaw if she would prefer to sexually assault and kill the little girl or someone’s newborn daughter.

Six police officers involved in the probe were in the public gallery.

Judge Christopher Cornwall said: “Those photographs should never have come into existence.”

To Kinnear he said: “I’m wholly satisfied you are a very dangerous offender.”

Both admitted offences of possessing and distributing indecent pictures, some at the highest level of indecency.

Shaw further pleaded guilty to taking an indecent picture of a child and neglect after a probe found she took 21 images of the girl.

All the offences took place at Morecambe between October last year and May this year.

The little girl told police officers Shaw had taken ‘rude pictures of her’ and that ‘made her feel sad’.

Peter Barr, prosecuting, said: “Kinnear is described as a high-risk registered sex offender who was sentenced in 2010 to sexual activity with a child under 16 and detaining a child without lawful authority.

“On May 18 this year two police officers carried out an unannounced home visit. They noticed a white Sony mobile on the sofa which he at first denied belonged to him and then said he had bought it a month earlier.

“He consented to them looking at phone and said he was aware there were indecent images on the mobile.”

Officers found a message in which he asked the other party to “send images” and the other party had sent two images to him. A second HTC phone was also seized.

The Sony phone had a ‘highly-sexualised’ conversation between Kinnear and Shaw about the abuse of children.

The court heard Shaw was arrested and they seized her Samsung mobile tablet and some memory cards.

Shaw later claimed she had been ‘coerced’ by Kinnear and Judge Cornwall said: “You came under Kinnear’s utterly malign influence.”

Further analysis of messages showed Kinnear had requested other adults send him images of little girls

Defending Shaw, Janet Ironside argued Shaw, who is previously of good character, was not sexually motivated by her crimes.

She said she had been groomed by Kinnear, had low self confidence, had been bullied at school and had learning difficulties that were previously undiagnosed.

Defending Kinnear, Fraser Livesey said his guilty plea was entered at the first opportunity.

He revealed he would spend the rest of his sentence in segregation after being seriously assaulted by two inmates. Both are subject to sex offender prohibitions.

Three men have been sentenced after starting a brawl in a branch of Tesco’s.

Connor McIntosh, 21, Daniel Gray, 25, and Lee Forster, 25, were all charged with affray after an altercation with two employees at Tesco’s on Newcastle Road in Sunderland.

Newcastle Crown Court heard that the three men had been shopping at the supermarket on October 25 last year with McIntosh being asked to leave the store after being aggressive towards staff and causing trouble.

CCTV footage showed the men leaving the store and heading into the car park.

Mr Alec Burns prosecuting said that McIntosh – who has previous convictions for battery and criminal damage – then approached two employees of Tesco’s who were on their break and became aggressive towards them.

He threatened to slash them and continued to point and wave his arms around aggressively.

The CCTV footage shows McIntosh edging closer to one of the men before a fight breaks out.

Mcintosh is then seen throwing punches before Gray and Forster join in.

Mr Burns said: “Thankfully there were no lasting injuries and everyone got into Murray’s car and fled.

“The car was driven dangerously and was pursued by police before crashing into a school fence.”

McIntosh, of Barwick Street, Durham and Gray, of Northlands, Durham made no reply when interviewed by police and Forster, of Station View, Chester-Le-Street said he had joined in on the fight to protect his friends.

All three pleaded guilty to affray at a previous hearing.

The court heard that five months later on March 6 this year, Gray was intoxicated outside the Bridge Pub in Chester-Le-Street while still on bail for the affray.

Mr Burns said: “He was drinking a bottle of cider and was clearly drunk when an altercation between his brother began.

“The two began fighting in the street and at some point Gray pulled out an unloaded BB gun.

“His brother knew it was an imitation firearm but the defendant began pointing the gun at passing traffic.”

Concerned members of the public phoned the police and Gray was arrested.

He was initially compliant but once in the police car started telling the arresting officers that he would kill them and that they had “entered a very dark world” and threatened to “blow their heads off.”

Anthony Davis, defending Gray said that he bought the gun for £35 and was initially going to be used for shooting birds in the woods.

He said that he also accepts that the members of the public would have been very concerned seeing the weapon.

Gray pleaded guilty to possession of an imitation firearm at a previous hearing and was sentenced to 22 months in prison for both offences.

McIntosh, who was said to have given up taking drugs and was in employment was sentenced to six months in prison, suspended for 18 months as well as being ordered to carry out 120 hours unpaid work.

Lee Forster, who was said to have the better record of the men was sentenced to six months in prison, suspended for 12 months as well as supervision for 12 months and ordered to carry out 100 hours unpaid work.

A ‘horrific’ South Yorkshire paedophile who raped two vulnerable young children after buying them sweets has been jailed for 20 years.

James Andrew Swindlehurst, 43, of Rockingham Street, Honeywell, Barnsley was sentenced at Leeds Crown Court after being found guilty of 13 non-recent counts of rape and indecent assault of a child.

Swindlehurst denied the offences against two victims that spanned a five-year period during the 1990s and 2000s.

He was found guilty by a jury following a trial at Sheffield Crown Court in October.

Detective Constable Elinor Duke, leading the investigation, said: “This man took advantage of the fact that the children were vulnerable.

“He gained their trust by building a friendship with them and making them feel ‘needed’.

“He would buy them sweets and take them out before carrying out a prolonged period of sexual abuse, telling them that there was no point telling anyone as nobody would believe them.”

The victims made a disclosure to police in April 2014 and Swindlehurst was arrested and a full investigation was carried out.

DC Duke added: “The bravery that the victims have shown in coming forward is exceptional.

“They did it with the motivation to prevent Swindlehurst hurting any other children.

“It is testament to the courage of the victims that he is now facing 20 years behind bars and I hope today’s sentencing sends a message that we will take action and catch those responsible for such horrific acts.”

THREE grandparents have been jailed for attacking a couple outside a pub – because they thought the male victim was Polish.

Paul Clarke, Sean Pickerill and Judith Pickerill – all in their forties – took part in the assault on Slovakian Milan Panacek and his English girlfriend Genevieve Barnett during a night out in Newcastle.

Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court heard tension had sparked between the male defendants and Mr Panacek because of the design of T-shirts they were wearing.

Sean Pickerill’s top bore the logo ‘Blood and Honour – England’, while Clarke’s had the brand ‘One True Saxon’.

Mr Panacek’s shirt had a quote in Spanish relating to the country’s civil war.

Following a disagreement on the dancefloor of The Rigger pub, Mr Panacek and Miss Barnett went outside where they were attacked by a group of around eight people, which included the defendants.

Prosecutor Elizabeth Power said: “They were shouting racial abuse about Mr Panacek being Polish.

“He tried to tell them he wasn’t Polish.

“Judith Pickerill punched Miss Barnett and scratched her to the face.

She pulled her backwards, pulling at her hair extensions.

“She fell to the floor and hit her head on the pavement.

“Her extensions were pulled out at the roots and blood was coming from her head.”

Judith Pickerill, aged 45, of St Bernard’s Road, Newcastle, went on to assault the pub’s manager Robert Birchill.

Father-of-three Sean Pickerill, aged 46, and Clarke were attacking Mr Panacek.

Police arrived to find the group which included the defendants making Nazi salutes and shouting: “Go back to your own country.”

Miss Power said witnesses described the group as ‘like a pack of animals’.

The court heard Miss Barnett suffered injuries including concussion and whiplash, and suffered blackouts after the incident.

Mr Panacek, who has lived in the UK for six years, had a fractured nose.

All three defendants pleaded guilty to racially aggravated assault occasioning actually bodily harm. Judith Pickerill also admitted common assault.

The court heard they all had previous convictions but had not been in trouble for a number of years.

Marc Davies, representing Judith Pickerill and 47-year-old Clarke, also of St Bernard’s Road, said: “They are ashamed and very sorry.

“These are two people that had been out of trouble for a long time, addressed any issues with drugs and settled down with families and full time employment.

“They are active and involved grandparents.”

Paul Cliff, representing Sean Pickerill, of St Giles Road, Knutton – who also has a grandchild – said: “He works in the construction industry alongside people from all over the world including Eastern Europeans and there have been no problems.”

Judge David Fletcher sentenced each defendant to 12 months in prison. He told them: “This was an ugly, appalling incident. Your racial comments, in the hearing of numerous people, were completely ignorant. You are three people in your mid-forties. That makes this offence even more shocking.”

An Essex woman was cautioned by police for bragging on social media that she had posted dog poo through her Muslim neighbours letterbox the night of the attacks on Paris.

At 8.53pm on November 13, Karen Hastie, from Grays, put messages on Facebook stating she sent the gruesome package to deliver “someone’s karma” after Islamic State terrorists killed 129 people in the French capital.

The 53-year-old wrote: “I just delivered someones karma. Mrs muz rat b*** face from yesterday has just got a jiffy envelope filled with dog **** through the b****** letterbox. I wish I could be fly on the wall. Imagine opening a package filled with ****. Happy days for sure.”

Friends of Ms Hastie commented with their support of her actions and encouraged a second rancid delivery.

The posts were added to other social media sites and Essex Police confirmed the posts had been passed to their hate crime team to investigate.

Essex Police issued her with a caution for malicious communications on November 23.

A spokeswoman for the force said: “A 53-year-old woman received a caution for malicious communications following her arrest on Tuesday, November 19, relating to reports of offensive Facebook posts.”

Ms Hastie is also said to have posted links in support of the English Defence League.
